The Coyote

The coyote, Canis latrans, is common throughout Utah. They inhabit a wide variety of habitats including; deserts, grasslands, forests and urban areas. Coyotes are active year-round and are generally nocturnal. We hear coyotes while hiking far more frequently than we see them. One incredibly interesting fact is the coyotes are known to form friendships with American badgers and hunt cooperatively together, assisting each other with digging for prey. While many are afraid of coyotes, attacks on humans are very uncommon and rarely cause serious injuries due to the small size of coyotes.
