The Wasatch Penstemon

The sego lily commonly occurs on the open sagebrush foothills and valleys of Utah. It can also be found in open ponderosa pine stands at higher elevations. It prefers dry, sandy soils. Native Americans considered the bulb-like roots of sego lily a great delicacy and taught the Mormon pioneers to use the bulb when food got scarce. As a result of this, the sego lily was designated the Utah State Flower.
