The gopher snake can be easily distinguished from rattlesnakes by their narrower head.

The Gopher Snake

The gophersnake, Pituophis catenifer, is a common species in much of Utah. It can be found in most habitats, ranging from low desert to high mountains. Gophersnakes are great at impersonating rattlesnakes, including vibrating their tails agains dead leaves and brush to mimic the rattling sound.

  • Length: 36" to 84"
