Early spring largemouth at Utah Lake

Largemouth bass have been biting well at Utah Lake, according to Mark Cook. Mark operates the Lindon Boat Harbor and he said people have been catching a surprising number of bucket-mouths right in the harbor, as well as from brushy areas along shore over by Saratoga. He said walleye fishing is also picking up, with several anglers catching fish near the Bubble-Up behind Geneva Steel.

This is very early for largemouth bass in northern Utah. But the lake has been ice free for some time. The fish become more active during warm spells. Wait for a couple warm days then push your boat onto the lake and work the shorelines where brush or trees come down into the water. Mark said it is important to cast right up next to shore — into the brush — and then work your lure back into the deep water.

Spinner baits have worked well, in greens and yellows. They are effective for this type of fishing because you can cast them right into brush and they seldom snag. The hook angles inward and so the lure bounces off obstacles. Jigs rigged in a snag-free manner can also be effective.

The walleye have been hitting worms, spinners and jigs. Feathered jigs in greens, yellows and white have worked. Look for walleye along the bank and out to the end of the pipeline. The fish come into that that area to spawn and so fishing should be good for the next several weeks.

White bass have also been biting in the marinas. They tend to school — sometimes there is a bunch and at other times you wont catch a fish. Look for them along the shorelines in the marinas. You can often catch them from the bank. They hit small jigs, spinners and baits.
