Dates For Ice Fishing
- Early December - Small, high elevation waters
- Mid December - Scofield, Otter Creek, Panguitch Lake
- Christmas - Strawberry, Fish Lake, most other waters
- Mid January - Bear Lake, Flaming Gorge
Stormy weather slows the freeze. If we get mild or extremely stormy weather some waters (Bear Lake, Flaming Gorge) may never freeze.
Lake Powell and St. George-area waters do not freeze sufficiently to support ice fishing.
Ice Safety
Do not try to fish unless ice is at least 2-3 inches thick. At least 3-4 inches is needed to support a small group of fishermen.
There is often thin ice around the edges of a lake, and near springs and inlets. Always test the ice and be extremely cautious.
If there is soft ice around the edges of a lake a plank can be used to bridge from shore to solid ice.
Stay dry. If you get wet, head for shelter immediately. Hypothermia is a great danger.
Always wear waterproof boots and warm socks. Always have a good coat and gloves. You may shed the coat when fishing in sunshine but a cloud or breeze can quickly put a chill into the air. Be prepared.
Tell someone where you are going and when you expect to return.
