Lake Powell largemouth and smallmouth fishing was great last week. Action may slow temporarily if our weekend storm goes that far south. Bass and striped bass will provide good fishing as stable weather rebuilds, and action will get better and better through April.

Launch ramps are being extended at Powell. You can launch at most marinas but there are restrictions. Details.

Walleye should now be staging near spawning areas. At Utah Lake, look for them near rocky structure around the harbors and the Bubble-Up, and around Bird Island and Lincoln Beach. At Willard Bay, look for fish in deep water just off the dikes and around the "island." The best fishing will occur during low-light periods (early and late in the day, and when it is overcast).

Deer Creek has open water. Trout, walleye and perch fishing has been spotty - good if you find just the right spot.

Trout fishing is very good in most of our streams. Blue wing and midge patterns are working well. Most of the action is below the surface, but stay alert because dry fly action can be great at times.

Runoff is already an issue on some waters during warm weather. The Sevier, Weber and Green have tributaries that pump in muddy water some days. The volume isn't great and so you can usually find fishable water by moving a short ways up or downstream. Serious runoff will start in a couple weeks if we continue to have this amazingly warm weather.

There is considerable open water at Jordanelle, Rockport and Echo. Float tubing near the inlets can be productive this time of year. Rainbows are moving into tributaries, where they provide great fishing.

Starvation is also losing its ice cap. Traditionally, there is some good brown trout fishing there as the ice pulls back.

Flaming Gorge has open water on the lower end, and is providing good fishing for rainbows and an occasional lake trout. Ice is pulling back in the Lucerne area and action will soon be good there.

Otter Creek, Minersville, Millsite and many other southern Utah reservoirs now have open water and offer fair to good fishing.

Pineview has some open water. Fishing there has been slow, and probably won't pick up for a couple weeks.

Income tax day is coming. DWR reminds people they can help non-game wildlife species by checking the donation box when they file tax returns.
