Sevenmile Creek

By Jim Brearton
(As published in Utah Fishing magazine)

Flowing into the northwest end of Johnson's Reservoir, this creek deserves some special recognition. It contains some of the prettiest 8 to 14 inch brookies anywhere and a wondrous supply of caddis. I saw my first caddis hatch there this year, way back in May. Net samples of the creek produced free swimming caddis as well as the cased variety, in prolific numbers, along with the other commonly found mayflies, crane fly larvae and a few stone flies.

As the water flows into Johnson's, it cascades down a short canyon forming many pools. I had great success floating a chamois caddis through them. At the top of the canyon, up a well maintained dirt road a mile or so, the topography flattens out and the stream meanders much like your typical meadow stream. Dry fly fishing is successful here.

Range cattle are sometimes allowed to graze through this area and they can cause lots of damage in a hurry. This practice is coming under scrutiny more and more. I didn't fish this upper area but it looked to flow for several miles so I'm sure one could find plenty of fishable water.

The water was gin-clear in May, so this could be an early season alternative.

Nearby Johnson Res. is a cyclic fishery. It has been overrun by chubs and so has not been productive during the past several years. Before that it was one of the best reservoirs in the state for chunky rainbows and I've had some of my best float tubing there. There is plenty of camping in the area and stores and lodges near Fish Lake, a few miles up the road. UM Creek and the Fremont River are other nearby waters you should try.
