Fishing Currant Creek |
|
Currant Creek is a beautiful stream that flows from the Currant Creek Reservoir for about 20 miles before it dumps into the Strawberry River. For most of its length it flows through private ground and downstream from Highway 40 much of that ground is posted "no fishing." The bright spot is the 10 or 12 miles upstream from Highway 40 toward the Currant Creek Reservoir. Again, most of the ground the stream flows through is private. Fortunately the land owners have had the good sense to not close this portion of the stream. Yes, there have been litter problems and there have been a few slob fishermen that have cut or tromped down fences and chased the livestock. However, the land owners have put up with and picked up after the slobs. The land owners have kept the stream open mostly because of the kids. You see most of the people that fish Currant Creek bring their families and Currant Creek is just the right size for kids. It isn't so deep and swift that there is any great danger if the kids want to go off and fish by themselves. And, the stream is easy enough to fish that almost everyone catches something. Now, don't get me wrong here, Currant Creek has some big brown trout in it that are not at-all easy to fish for. As a matter-of fact, in the crystal clear water they are extremely difficult to catch. On the other hand, the DWR plants the stream with rainbow and that is mostly what the kids catch (the stream was recently planted with several thousand catchable size fish). The DWR and the Nature Conservancy have been working with the landowners to buy a right-of-way along the stream that will ensure the stream always remained open for fishing. As soon as the right-of-way is assured, the Forest Service will do some stream restoration work. The end result will be a tremendous family fishery just 15 or 20 minutes on down the road (east on Hwy 40) from Strawberry. If you haven't taken the time to fish Currant Creek, do it now! And, if you want to bring your boat, go ahead. Some real nice rainbows and cutts come out of Currant Creek Reservoir. Trollers often have the best luck but drift fishermen also bringing in some nice fish. Shore fishing is best in the early mornings and evenings and is not as productive as fishing from a boat. |
